NSX Host Health Check – What, Why and How ?

Based on my experiences of deploying NSX for various customers, I believe good stable design would really reap good results. On a contrary, I have seen people making siple use cases quite complex as well.

Well, not to go offtrack, one thing I would like to point out here is, be it any environment on any scale, health monitoring always play an important part to keep things under control.

During my earlier deployments, I remember running into issues and once the issue gets fixed, as a part of health check, we used to check whether all hosts are able to establish respective channels with NSX controllers and NSX Manager or not. Or we used to check whether NSX VIBS are correctly installed or removed on / from each host or not depending on the performed operations

To our easy escape we can leverage ‘show host “host-name” health-status’ from the NSX Manager central CLI to check the health status of each ESXi host whether the health status is reported as critical, unhealthy, or healthy.

For Example:

nsx-mgr> show host host-33 health-status detail
The host associated cluster check [DONE]
The NSX component installation check [DONE]
The NSX module VXLAN installation check [DONE]
The NSX module DLR installation check [DONE]
